Wheelchair Transportation vs. Rideshare and Why They Are Not the Same

4 min readInsights on Non-Emergency Medical Transportation

Rideshare applications work well for many trips. Medical transportation for wheelchair users is not among them.

Every day, people attempt to use rideshare apps for wheelchair transport and run into the same problems. Drivers cancel when they see the equipment. Vehicles arrive without ramp systems. Drivers who want to help do not know how to properly secure a wheelchair, which creates a safety risk for the entire ride. Appointments get missed. The passenger is left without options at the last minute.

This is not a failure of individual rideshare drivers. It is a mismatch between the tool and the task. Rideshare vehicles are standard consumer cars operated by drivers with standard licenses. They are appropriate for standard trips. Wheelchair transport requires something fundamentally different.

A proper wheelchair transport vehicle is purpose-built for this work. It is equipped with a hydraulic lift or ramp system rated for the weight of the wheelchair and the passenger. The floor has mounted securement tracks where tie-down straps attach to the wheelchair frame at four anchor points. The wheelchair rides secured to the floor, which keeps the passenger stable through every turn, stop, and change in speed. The passenger does not transfer out of their chair into a seat. They board in their chair and remain in their chair for the entire trip.

The driver of a wheelchair transport vehicle receives training specific to this service. That training covers how to deploy and operate the lift safely, how to secure a wheelchair correctly without damaging the frame or tires, how to assist passengers with boarding and deboarding in a way that respects their dignity and physical limitations, and how to respond appropriately to situations that arise when transporting someone already managing a health condition.

ADA-compliant wheelchair transportation means the service meets federal standards under the Americans with Disabilities Act. The vehicle meets specifications for lift capacity, floor clearance, and securement systems. The service does not discriminate based on disability. The experience is designed around the needs of the passenger.

FedNor Transportation operates ADA-compliant wheelchair vehicles throughout MetroWest Massachusetts serving Framingham, Waltham, Natick, Sudbury, Wellesley, and surrounding communities.
